This article is right on target. It's my belief that if, as parents, we take responsibility for teaching proper behavioral skills to our children while we raise them, they will not be facing these "social shortcomings" when the time comes for them to hit the workplace. I'm not denying that all the technological advancements have not placed added responsibility on each of us for staying on our toes (and in turn, staying on our kid's backs!) but that shouldn't matter. I think it still comes down to good manners and accepting no less from your child. Being well-mannered will equip them with the knowledge it takes to know that not looking someone in the eye who is speaking to them is rude ALWAYS and not giving one's full attention where it ought to be because one is multi-tasking is unthinkable. By setting rules and guidelines now regarding their cell phones and computers, they won't be confused later about what is acceptable behavior. We should each take responsibility for laying the foundation of good manners in our children and that must also include technological etiquette.

WOW. I wish I could carry this video around with me when I'm trying to explain to others in words what it feels like when a person has a light around them. Explanation alone is sometimes futile. THIS is what I'm talking about. It's more than a light; it is an electrical current that passes through one's soul and becomes contagious to those around them. He doesn't just sing this song--he FEELS this song and through that strong current, passes it along to those who surround him. I love that feeling. That's why those special people in whose presence I feel this light will always be irresistible to me. They remind me what it's all about.

Being from Alaska, I have seen first hand the effects of global warming. I have witnessed glaciers calve off in monumental proportions.

In fact, I found a disturbing, yet spectacular movie that shows global warming footage of calving glaciers. Huge chunks of ice breaking off into the ocean! You can find this film called "Alaska, The Tracy Arm Experience" on Film Baby HERE:

I highly recommend buying Alaska, The Tracy Arm Experience. Watch the glaciers disappear before your eyes and show your friends and family what is really going on in Alaska.

I was there and Elie was phenomenal. I'm wondering if you happened to get any photos at the amplitheater. I sat on the incline so I could see over people (I am quite short) but couldn't get a decent photo from there....and didn't think to take one at the book signing.
I especially love the quote he left to the teacher who asked for a bit of advice for his/her students.

I appreciate your furiously taken notes-- allowing the rest of us to benefit also from Elie Wiesel's keen insights. I too believe that it is possible to be moral without practicing any one religion, but I am sure there may be some who would dispute that. It's my belief that you will be led towards that which is intended to influence and guide you and that may or may not include religion and it may or may not change as your life progresses. I appreciate especially, his message to the young to "BE who you are". I touched on this point in my own most recent blog, and am amazed at how easily those four words can roll off your tongue, yet how difficult they are to consistently put into practice. It may have been a message for the young, but isn't it a lesson we all need to be reminded of every now and then, as well as allowing others to be who they are as well? Like I said, I was just pondering this very idea recently myself and since I'm not one to believe in coincidence, I'm aware I've been sent a message in his words and for that I am grateful.
