CGL Fellow wins “” grant for creating first female soccer league in Kilimanjaro region’s rural schools

10.14.2010– The Center for Global Leadership (CGL) has won a grant for creating the first female soccer league in the Kilimanjaro region’s rural schools. According to Martin Fox, CGL President & CEO, “The Foundation recognizes inspired young adults who implement meaningful projects at home or around the world. Alyssa’s work in Tanzania this summer is a perfect example of the ability of young people to accelerate the global ripple”.

The brainchild of Alyssa von Puttkammer (CGL Fellow, PCHS alum, and a member of the Tufts University soccer team), Alyssa traveled to Tanzania this summer to run a series of girl’s soccer camps. Alyssa’s dream was to empower young females by teaching them the same critical life skills that she had learned through sports. What von Puttkammer did not realize was how popular her soccer program would be in the rural villages.

Within a few weeks, Alyssa’s “soccer camp” transformed into the Kilimanjaro region’s first female soccer league for rural schools, with 78 girls, 5 teams, and a whole new generation of female soccer players. In the past, rural soccer had been the exclusive domain of males, but von Puttkammer and the girls dismantled that barrier.

Congratulations to Alyssa von Puttkammer and the soccer playing girls of the Kilimanjaro Region.

The Center for Global Leadership trains, mentors, and resources our planet’s inspired social & environmental entrepreneurs. Their work is followed by people from 6 continents and 122 countries.
